When Dark Means Bright
The first things to come to mind when I hear Takashi Murakami's name are breast milk jump ropes, Louis Vuitton and Kanye West. With the broadness of his pop culture influence, one can't ignore Murakami as a brand. Now, I'm all about people getting theirs, but there was an element of his commercial pervasiveness that did turn me off. But, when I went to the opening at Gagosian last night and was confronted with his gigantic four-panel painting, titled Picture of Fate: I Am But a Fisherman Who Angles In the Darkness of His Mind, I was completely awestruck. The vibrant colors and pop elements were to die for and I was immediately reminded of why Murakami is so fucking rich and famous.
I was fortunate enough to be hanging out with some of the artists that create his pieces (I won't go down the rabbit whole on this now, but this was totally crazy to me too) and hearing about the process used to create his super-flat pieces was ridic. I mean, silk screening, giant printers, emulsions, and electric sanders in water (to name a few) added a whole new level of depth and respect for me. Regardless of fully understanding what's being communicated, I once again, had my mind blown by things that I will never full understand.
The inviting china-lions, tie dye sunbursts, and multi-colored baby skulls provide an uplifting look at the bad and I can't wait to see the other two panels that will be posted by Monday at the gallery.

Chris Brown on beating Rhianna
Chris Brown digs himself an even deeper hole on Larry King with his moms by his side. I love when Larry asks him how he feels about the abuse he inflicted on Rhianna and he replies "its crazy to me, i'm like, wow". I don't know about you Chris, but when I say "wow" im usualy referring to something I enjoyed. Well played though with the baby blue bow tie, moms, and ambiguous answers. Next best excuse besides insanity is definitely amnesia, especially with violent crimes. Chris has been cut by peers like Jay-Z and Beyonce and ousted from award shows, in other words, his career is pretty much cannon.

Obese or Not Obese
Picking up new slang and integrating things me and the homies have created into common vernacular is a favorite past time of mine. At times it can be frustrating explaining the meaning of my hot off the press vocabulary, but it's rewarding when people wanna pick it up and use it themselves.
The other day while cruising Perez Hilton I came across a posting where he uses the term OBESE (instead of huge) which is something me and my boy Two Cents have been sprinkling into our vocab since January.
Definition
OBESE- to go really, fucking big; out of hand; putting it down like an animal; Synonym, also see Full Blown Wookie
I'm adding this shit to UrbanDictionary.com today since it's not currently repped. I'll keep you posted on if it gets published. I'm sure sure it'll catch on if it's already gaining traction in the Cuban and the GLBT community. Best be sure, we're taking full credit!

I Use Protection
Real talk, guys do some weird shit. Especially when it comes to masturbating. I was just let in on something this weekend called the "Posh Jerk" (also known as the "Posh Wank"). In short, it's when a guy beats off using a condom. The visual is pure comedy, but I can see the draw for lazy and fastidious men.
Which brings me to Chester French. I bet these awkward, nerdy, ivy league boys did some serious fantasizing prior to becoming Pharrell's darlings. (Perhaps even a posh jerk?) Either way, I'm into it and haven't gotten over the song She Loves Everybody. Ironically, they marketed the cover for the single as an open condom wrapper, playing off the line in the song "she craves affection, so I use protection". I wonder if the song is based on Max's short lived marriage to Peaches Geldof and if so, I sure hope he bagged it up cause I hear she's a tramp.

However, I also heard (& saw) some surprising news from the cuddies @ the One Love party last night that the homie Rev Mcfly (of Ninjasonik) fucking DDT'd Diplo in LA!!!!%$#@* (Still LMAO!). Apparently Diplo was talkin' some foul ish about Ninjasonik and they weren't havin' that. I guess u gotta watch what u say on twitter or prepared to watch you're back (and ankles)...LOL! ROTFL!

Zombie Takeover
With their new "Congo Fire" release on Dirtybird and an upcoming release on Jesse Rose's Made to Play imprint, Zombie Disco Squad are some cats to watch out for in 2009. At Subculture SF's Valentine's Day party last month, I heard Dirtybird's J. Phlip drop a hot piece by ZDS and went bananas. Their unique brand of house incorporates african rhythms and hip-hop snippets to create some fresh nu club pschidt. Keep a close eye on these boys...

Baby it'll be ok...
After hearing the podcast that Mayer Hawthorne recently did for Stones Throw and watching the video for "Just Ain't Gonna Work Out" that Simone sent me today, I can definitely say that I am sold. The multi-talented singer/producer/musician is so amazing that Peanut Butter Wolf thought he was listening to a re-edit of an old soul track when he was played Mayor Hawthorne's demo! I mean this white, 29 year old Ann Arbor native must have really listened to a lot of motown records to be able to create music that sounds like Rafael Saadiq and J Dilla had musical babies. Stay on the lookout for this man soon to make his mark in the near future...
